Puppets

These puppets have been selected because they are particularly useful for mathematics teaching, although they are invaluable in other areas of the curriculum as well. If you have been on any of our maths courses you will have seen all these puppets in action and know how they engage the children in an truly unique way .

Kangaroo Puppet with Two Babies

The Kangaroo uses its pouch to hide shapes, numbers, and objects which it can then give children clues about to help them to guess what is hidden. It is also great for counting in tens (nodding action), and in ones (hand action) and can therefore indicate any number to 100 and beyond for the children to guess and is great for jumping in tens and ones along a number line. The two babies can be used to introduce doubling and halving, sharing equally, dividing and multiplying by two.

A truly mathematically gifted kangaroo!

Height 43cm

“Today the kangaroo has some beads in its pouch. Some are red and some are yellow. There are 5 beads altogether. Can you draw a picture of make a number sentence to show how many red and how many yellow there could be?”

Rabbit in Lettuce Puppet with 6 Bugs

Another puppet that is great at hiding things - just watch the children’s reaction when the rabbit magically appears! Items can either be hidden by the rabbit in the centre of the lettuce or can be hidden in any of the Velcro leaves. There are 10 leaves making this an ideal puppet to practice number bonds.

Height 33cm

“This might look like an ordinary lettuce but it is in fact a Bug Hotel managed by Mr Rabbit. The hotel has 10 rooms. Tonight 6 of the rooms are full. How many are available? Tomorrow night there are 3 spiders, 2 caterpillars, 1 ant and 3 worms staying. How many rooms will be needed if they have a room each?”

Squawking Macaw Puppet

Children love this brightly coloured bird. He is great for getting the children to focus on counting sounds. He also makes a very good ‘Waku Waku’ character for those schools using the Suffolk Empty Number Line Programme. The macaw also likes to collect things that have something in common. The collection can build up over the course of a week until children have identified the criteria and can begin to offer macaw new items to add to his collection, which he will either accept or reject.

Height 45cm

Likes the sound of his own voice, but we love him!
